... Entering the Water Teaching the non-swimmer to enter the water safely is an important starting point. This can be achieved through a variety of methods and must be appropriate to the needs of the individual. STEPPING DOWN THE LADDER Teaching Points • face the steps • hold with both hands • one step at a time Considerations • useful for the nervous • time consuming if done with large numbers SITTING ENTRY Teaching Points • both hands to one side • turn to face the wall • lower the body carefully Swimming Lessons AyrshireFront CrawlFront Crawl is the fastest of the four competitive strokes. The body position is almost flat and the constant propulsion from the alternating arm and leg actions make it a very efficient stroke. Body Position Key Points • flat with a slight slope down to the hips. The head is neither buried nor lifted. The waterline is between the eyebrows and natural hairline • eyes look forwards and downwards • the slight slope down to the hips keeps the kick in the water • shoulders roll into the stroke to utilise the strong chest muscles and to generate a strong propulsive force • slight head adjustments change the position of the legs. If the head is lifted the legs will drop and vice-versa, like a see-saw • the legs work almost within body depth. This creates the least resistance to forward motion Swimming Lessons AyrshireFloatingProne Float
This horizontal float can be a continuation of a prone push and glide. It can also be achieved from standing by lowering the shoulders and gently leaning forwards to lie face down in the water. A star float or X position is an easy variation. A count of ten is enough time to sustain the face down position. Key Points • take a breath • lean forward to face down position • lift the legs • make a star shape • relax • keep the head down Swimming Lessons Ayrshire
