... Jumping EntriesPrior to teaching a jumping entry it is important to give consideration to the depth of water in relation to size of the pupil (hard impact with the pool floor can result in injury). It is important to teach the pupil how to land safely, i.e., bending the knees to absorb the force. WITH HELPER ON THE SIDE • helper secured and holding pupil's hand Teaching Points • toes over the edge • bend knees on landing Considerations • suitable for those with confidence • pupils must normally be able to stand in the water • not suitable in very shallow water WITH HELPER IN THE WATER • helper reaches towards the child Considerations • helper must be confident in the water • helper should be an adult UNAIDED Once the pupil can jump confidently to a helper in the water the next step is to jump unaided. At this point it is vital to stress: Teaching Points • look forwards • stress feet first entry Benefits of an unaided jumping entry • al lows the whole group to enter at the same time • saves time • is good fun Swimming Lessons BristolTeaching Treading WaterPractice • in shoulder depth water, a float under each arm, try out different leg actions. Teaching Point • put as little pressure as possible on the floats. Practice • with one float held with both hands, practise chosen leg actions Teaching Points • continuous movement of the legs • tip head slightly back if needed Practice • in water where the swimmers are out of their depth, hold the rail (side) at arms length, hold a float in the other hand, and practise chosen leg actions Teaching Point • gentle, unhurried leg action Practice • at the side, hold the rail as before but scull with the other arm. Practise chosen leg action Teaching Point • scull well below the surface Before going on to treading water entirely independently, it is useful to practise floating skills. This underlines the fact that little effort and energy need be used in order to stay afloat when treading water. Swimming Lessons BristolFloatingSupine Float
Being on the back means that breathing is easy. The position is ideally that taken up in a supine push and glide from which the skill may be practised. It can also be achieved from the standing position by lowering the shoulders to the surface and gently lying back in the water. If the legs tend to sink, it can be helpful to allow them to relax and bend. Try gently extending the arms beyond the head to a star position. These adjustments redistribute the weight and may succeed in enabling horizontal flotation. Key Points • relax and pillow the head back in the water • take a breath • shoulders down, lie back gently • lift the feet • gently extend the arms • maintain a star shape Swimming Lessons BristolBristol city centre Arno's Vale Ashley Down Ashton Vale Avonmouth Baptist Mills Barrs Court Bedminster Bishopston Bishopsworth Blaise Hamlet Botany Bay Bower Ashton Brentry Brislington Broadmead Broomhill Burchells Green Cabot Canons Marsh Catbrain Chesterfield Park Clay Hill Clifton Combe Dingle Cotham Crew's Hole Crofts End Downend Eastville Easton Emersons Green Filton Filwood Park Fishponds Frenchay Golden Hill Hartcliffe Henbury Hengrove Henleaze Hillfields Horfield Hotwells Kensington Park Kingsdown Kingswood Knowle Knowle West Lawrence Weston Lockleaze Longwell Green Mayfield Park Montpelier Newtown North Common Oldland Common Patchway Redland Ridgeway Rose Green Sea Mills Shirehampton Sneyd Park Southmead Southville Speedwell St Andrews St Annes St George St Pauls St Phillips Marsh St Werburghs Staple Hill Stapleton Stockwood Stoke Bishop Totterdown Two Mile Hill Upper Knowle Victoria Park Warmley Westbury on Trym Whitchurch Whitehall Whiteway Wick Willsbridge Windmill Hill Withywood Ashley Down-Bristol City (near Bristol) Barrs Court-Bristol City (near Kingswood) Bedminster Down-Bristol City (near Bristol) Bristol-Bristol City Bristol International Airport-North Somerset (near Nailsea) Clay Hill-Bristol City (near Kingswood) Coombe Dingle-Bristol City (near Filton) Lawrence Weston-Bristol City (near Avonmouth) Long Ashton-Bristol City (near Bristol) New Cheltenham-Bristol City (near Kingswood) Sea Mills-Bristol City (near Avonmouth) St Annes Park-Bristol City (near Bristol) Staple Hill-Bristol City (near Kingswood) Stockland Bristol-Somerset (near Burnham on Sea) Stoke Bishop-Bristol City (near Bristol) Westbury On Trym-Bristol City (near Filton) Westbury Park-Bristol City (near Bristol)
