We know that making the decision to book swimming lessons is very difficult for some.  For that reason we always make sure you have ample opportunity to talk with us first.

We are so confident that even the most fearful will enjoy Learning to Swim With Us with us that we promise that if you find you don't want to continue after your first private swimming lesson, then all it will cost you is your time and travelling.

We know that first step towards booking swimming lessons is all important.  For that reason we always make sure you have ample opportunity to talk with us first.

Please note that this website is Gay's at Swim With Us.  Irene and Steve each have their own websites and we work as individuals.  I will be quite happy to help you find the right place for your lessons.  Irene has a lovely private pool for your individual use.  Steve teaches in public pools and can also offer private swimming lessons.  He was also trained as a Total Immersion Coach.  Whoever you choose for your residential swimming lessons, you can be assured of a first class service for your one-to-one lessons, with your instructor in the water with you.

Movement in the Water

Children should be encouraged to move freely at the earliest opportunity. Some may require the support of artificial aids or the assistance of a helper in the water. The availability of this type of support should be removed as soon as safety and confidence permit.

Practices

• walk holding the rail/side

• walk alongside the rail/side without touching

Teaching Points

• slide feet along the bottom

• move slowly

• aim for shoulders below the surface

Developments

• walk anywhere around the pool

• walk changing speed

• walk changing direction including sideways and backwards

• walk in geometrical shapes/patterns

• jumping, hopping, skipping

As the pupils gain in confidence they should be allowed to experiment with a variety of movement patterns and games.

Front Crawl

Front Crawl is the fastest of the four competitive strokes. The body position is almost flat and the constant propulsion from the alternating arm and leg actions make it a very efficient stroke.

Body Position

Key Points

• flat with a slight slope down to the hips. The head is neither buried nor lifted. The waterline is between the eyebrows and natural hairline

• eyes look forwards and downwards

• the slight slope down to the hips keeps the kick in the water

• shoulders roll into the stroke to utilise the strong chest muscles and to generate a strong propulsive force

• slight head adjustments change the position of the legs. If the head is lifted the legs will drop and vice-versa, like a see-saw

• the legs work almost within body depth. This creates the least resistance to forward motion

Floating

Supine Float

swimming lessons - floating

Being on the back means that breathing is easy. The position is ideally that taken up in a supine push and glide from which the skill may be practised. It can also be achieved from the standing position by lowering the shoulders to the surface and gently lying back in the water. If the legs tend to sink, it can be helpful to allow them to relax and bend. Try gently extending the arms beyond the head to a star position. These adjustments redistribute the weight and may succeed in enabling horizontal flotation.

Key Points

• relax and pillow the head back in the water

• take a breath

• shoulders down, lie back gently

• lift the feet

• gently extend the arms

• maintain a star shape
