... Regaining the standing positionIt is essential that non-swimmers being introduced to the water, are taught how to regain the standing position very early in their swimming development. This will help to develop confidence and is also an important safety skill. Initially this should be introduced using buoyancy aids or floats. From the prone position Practice • push and glide to the wall (with float) Teaching Points • lift head • tuck up knees • allow the feet to go to the bottom • stand up Practice • push and glide to the wall (without a float) Teaching Points • pull downwards and backwards with both arms • both feet down together Practice • push and glide away from the wall (without float) Teaching Points • relax - do not hurry • allow the legs to move towards the bottom of the pool Swimming Lessons CumberlandBreaststrokeBreaststroke is the oldest and slowest of the four competitive strokes. It is the slowest because it is the least streamlined. There are several styles which can be developed as the skill level increases. Breaststroke is a popular recreational stroke because:- (i) Breathing is easy (ii) Swimmers can see where they are going (iii) A rest may be taken in the glide position Body Position Key Points • the body should be as horizontal as stroke movements allow. This means that there is a greater slope down to the seat than in other strokes in order to keep the leg action in the water • good floaters find it easy to achieve a stable, almost horizontal position. Poor floaters usually need to lift and lower the head every stroke cycle • ASA Law states that the shoulders must be horizontal. This helps to avoid uneven leg actions Swimming Lessons CumberlandFloatingAlphabet Floats
