... Underwater PracticesSubmerging the face in the water is crucial to the development of prone swimming strokes and skills. It is essential, therefore that the skill is developed at the earliest opportunity. Many games can be adapted to include submerging opportunities. The activities are as varied as the teacher's imagination. The following are few examples:- • washing the face • pouring water over the head e.g., sponges, watering cans • blowing bubbles • humming and singing under water • bobbing up and down • touching the floor with different body parts • picking up objects from the bottom of the pool • passing through hoops • talking to a partner • pulling faces under water Swimming Lessons DenbighshireBreaststrokeBreaststroke is the oldest and slowest of the four competitive strokes. It is the slowest because it is the least streamlined. There are several styles which can be developed as the skill level increases. Breaststroke is a popular recreational stroke because:- (i) Breathing is easy (ii) Swimmers can see where they are going (iii) A rest may be taken in the glide position Body Position Key Points • the body should be as horizontal as stroke movements allow. This means that there is a greater slope down to the seat than in other strokes in order to keep the leg action in the water • good floaters find it easy to achieve a stable, almost horizontal position. Poor floaters usually need to lift and lower the head every stroke cycle • ASA Law states that the shoulders must be horizontal. This helps to avoid uneven leg actions Swimming Lessons DenbighshireFloatingVertical Float
As the name indicates, the body is upright. This float is for those who are confident and safe in deep water and who find horizontal floating difficult. The arms are outstretched sideways and the head tilted slightly back. In undisturbed water it is possible to experiment with the effects of breathing out and breathing in, in relation to how low or high the pupils float in the water. Key Points • vertical body position • head back slightly • arms outstretched sideways Swimming Lessons DenbighshireAfonwen-Denbighshire (near Holywell) Betws Gwerfil Goch-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Brook House-Denbighshire (near St Asaph) Bryn Saith Marchog-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Bryneglwys-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Clawddnewydd-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Graigfechan-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Groesffordd Marli-Denbighshire (near Bodelwyddan) Llanarmon yn Ial-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Llanbedr Dyffryn-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Llidiart y Parc-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Melin y wig-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Nantglyn-Denbighshire (near St Asaph) Pandy'r Capel-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Pen y stryt-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Pentre celyn-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Pentre Coch-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Pentre Llanrhaeadr-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Pentre Saron-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Pwllglas-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) Rhyd y Meudwy-Denbighshire (near Ruthin) St Asaph-Denbighshire Tafarn y Gelyn-Denbighshire Tafarn y Gelyn-Denbighshire (near Mold)
