... Entering the Water Teaching the non-swimmer to enter the water safely is an important starting point. This can be achieved through a variety of methods and must be appropriate to the needs of the individual. STEPPING DOWN THE LADDER Teaching Points • face the steps • hold with both hands • one step at a time Considerations • useful for the nervous • time consuming if done with large numbers SITTING ENTRY Teaching Points • both hands to one side • turn to face the wall • lower the body carefully Swimming Lessons DumfriesshireTeaching Treading WaterPractice • in shoulder depth water, a float under each arm, try out different leg actions. Teaching Point • put as little pressure as possible on the floats. Practice • with one float held with both hands, practise chosen leg actions Teaching Points • continuous movement of the legs • tip head slightly back if needed Practice • in water where the swimmers are out of their depth, hold the rail (side) at arms length, hold a float in the other hand, and practise chosen leg actions Teaching Point • gentle, unhurried leg action Practice • at the side, hold the rail as before but scull with the other arm. Practise chosen leg action Teaching Point • scull well below the surface Before going on to treading water entirely independently, it is useful to practise floating skills. This underlines the fact that little effort and energy need be used in order to stay afloat when treading water. Swimming Lessons DumfriesshireFloatingMushroom (Jelly Fish) Float
"What goes up must come down", is true and applicable to learners who jump up to try and float. If the skill starts from a standing position, the shoulders should be lowered and the feet gently lifted from the pool floor. There are a few who, because of their physical make up, are unable to remain afloat even with their lungs full of air. Such non-floaters may need to move their arms and legs a little to achieve flotation. The mushroom float is easy because balance is achieved automatically. Some of the upper back should be above the surface, hence the name of the skill. It is a useful test for flotation. • shoulders down • take a breath • lift the feet • knees tucked • head down towards the knees • arms wrapped around the knees or shins Pupils can count to time themselves. Ten seconds is adequate. Pupils should be discouraged from holding their breath for longer periods.
