... Jumping EntriesPrior to teaching a jumping entry it is important to give consideration to the depth of water in relation to size of the pupil (hard impact with the pool floor can result in injury). It is important to teach the pupil how to land safely, i.e., bending the knees to absorb the force. WITH HELPER ON THE SIDE • helper secured and holding pupil's hand Teaching Points • toes over the edge • bend knees on landing Considerations • suitable for those with confidence • pupils must normally be able to stand in the water • not suitable in very shallow water WITH HELPER IN THE WATER • helper reaches towards the child Considerations • helper must be confident in the water • helper should be an adult UNAIDED Once the pupil can jump confidently to a helper in the water the next step is to jump unaided. At this point it is vital to stress: Teaching Points • look forwards • stress feet first entry Benefits of an unaided jumping entry • al lows the whole group to enter at the same time • saves time • is good fun Swimming Lessons FifeButterflyButterfly is the most recent of the strokes and is second in relation to speed, to Front Crawl Although the competitive Butterfly stroke is physically demanding, variations on the theme of Butterfly can be enjoyable activities that need not be too difficult. The potential to compete is developed gradually and learning the stroke should be fun. Babies often produce a dolphin type leg action without prompting. Body Position Key Points • prone, face down with the crown of the head leading • horizontal with an undulating, wave-like movement from head to toe • shoulders are kept level Swimming Lessons FifeFloatingProne Float
This horizontal float can be a continuation of a prone push and glide. It can also be achieved from standing by lowering the shoulders and gently leaning forwards to lie face down in the water. A star float or X position is an easy variation. A count of ten is enough time to sustain the face down position. Key Points • take a breath • lean forward to face down position • lift the legs • make a star shape • relax • keep the head down Swimming Lessons FifeBalcomie Links-Fife (near St Andrews) Blebo Craigs-Fife (near Cupar) Bow of Fife-Fife (near Cupar) Coaltown of Balgonie-Fife (near Glenrothes) Coaltown of Wemyss-Fife (near Buckhaven) Cupar Muir-Fife (near Cupar) Dalgety Bay-Fife (near Dunfermline) Den of Lindores-Fife (near Cupar) Dura Den-Fife (near Cupar) East Sands-Fife (near St Andrews) East Wemyss-Fife (near Buckhaven) Fife Keith-Moray (near Elgin) Grange of Lindores-Fife (near Cupar) Hazelton Walls-Fife (near Cupar) High Valleyfield-Fife (near Bo'Ness) Hill End-Fife (near Dunfermline) Hill of Beath-Fife (near Cowdenbeath) Kirkton Of Balmerino-Fife (near Dundee) Low Torry-Fife (near Bo'Ness) Lower Largo-Fife (near Buckhaven) Lundin Links-Fife (near Buckhaven) Milton of Balgonie-Fife (near Buckhaven) Newport on Tay-Fife (near Dundee) Newton of Falkland-Fife (near Glenrothes) North Queensferry-Fife (near Dunfermline) Peat Inn-Fife (near St Andrews) St Andrews-Fife St Monans-Fife St Monans-Fife (near St Andrews) Teasses Mill-Fife (near Cupar) Upper Largo-Fife (near Buckhaven) West Wemyss-Fife (near Buckhaven)
