... Regaining the standing positionIt is essential that non-swimmers being introduced to the water, are taught how to regain the standing position very early in their swimming development. This will help to develop confidence and is also an important safety skill. Initially this should be introduced using buoyancy aids or floats. From the prone position Practice • push and glide to the wall (with float) Teaching Points • lift head • tuck up knees • allow the feet to go to the bottom • stand up Practice • push and glide to the wall (without a float) Teaching Points • pull downwards and backwards with both arms • both feet down together Practice • push and glide away from the wall (without float) Teaching Points • relax - do not hurry • allow the legs to move towards the bottom of the pool Swimming Lessons HuntingdonshireBreaststrokeBreaststroke is the oldest and slowest of the four competitive strokes. It is the slowest because it is the least streamlined. There are several styles which can be developed as the skill level increases. Breaststroke is a popular recreational stroke because:- (i) Breathing is easy (ii) Swimmers can see where they are going (iii) A rest may be taken in the glide position Body Position Key Points • the body should be as horizontal as stroke movements allow. This means that there is a greater slope down to the seat than in other strokes in order to keep the leg action in the water • good floaters find it easy to achieve a stable, almost horizontal position. Poor floaters usually need to lift and lower the head every stroke cycle • ASA Law states that the shoulders must be horizontal. This helps to avoid uneven leg actions Swimming Lessons HuntingdonshireFloatingSupine Float
Being on the back means that breathing is easy. The position is ideally that taken up in a supine push and glide from which the skill may be practised. It can also be achieved from the standing position by lowering the shoulders to the surface and gently lying back in the water. If the legs tend to sink, it can be helpful to allow them to relax and bend. Try gently extending the arms beyond the head to a star position. These adjustments redistribute the weight and may succeed in enabling horizontal flotation. Key Points • relax and pillow the head back in the water • take a breath • shoulders down, lie back gently • lift the feet • gently extend the arms • maintain a star shape Swimming Lessons HuntingdonshireAbbots Ripton Abbotsley Alwalton Barham And Wooley Bluntisham Brampton Brington And Molesworth Broughton Buckden Buckworth Bury Bythorn And Keyston Catworth Chesterton Colne Conington Covington Denton And Caldecote Diddington Earith Easton Ellington Elton Eynesbury And Hardwicke Farcet Fenstanton Folksworth And Washingley Glatton Godmanchester Grafham Great Gransden Great Paxton Great Staughton Haddon Hail Weston Hamerton Hemingford Abbots Hemingford Grey Hilton Holme Holywell-Cum-Needingworth Houghton And Wyton Huntingdon Kimbolton Kings Ripton Leighton Bromswold Little Paxton Morborne Old Weston Oldhurst Perry Pidley-Cum-Fenton Ramsey Sawtry Sibson-Cum-Stibbington Somersham Southoe And Midloe Spaldwick St Ives St Neots Stilton Stow Longa Tetworth The Alconburys The Giddings The Offords The Stukeleys Tilbrook Toseland Upton And Coppingford Upwood And The Raveleys Wansford Warboys Waresley Water Newton Winwick Wistow Woodhurst Woodwalton Yaxley Yelling
