... Underwater PracticesSubmerging the face in the water is crucial to the development of prone swimming strokes and skills. It is essential, therefore that the skill is developed at the earliest opportunity. Many games can be adapted to include submerging opportunities. The activities are as varied as the teacher's imagination. The following are few examples:- • washing the face • pouring water over the head e.g., sponges, watering cans • blowing bubbles • humming and singing under water • bobbing up and down • touching the floor with different body parts • picking up objects from the bottom of the pool • passing through hoops • talking to a partner • pulling faces under water Swimming Lessons MiddlesexBreaststrokeBreaststroke is the oldest and slowest of the four competitive strokes. It is the slowest because it is the least streamlined. There are several styles which can be developed as the skill level increases. Breaststroke is a popular recreational stroke because:- (i) Breathing is easy (ii) Swimmers can see where they are going (iii) A rest may be taken in the glide position Body Position Key Points • the body should be as horizontal as stroke movements allow. This means that there is a greater slope down to the seat than in other strokes in order to keep the leg action in the water • good floaters find it easy to achieve a stable, almost horizontal position. Poor floaters usually need to lift and lower the head every stroke cycle • ASA Law states that the shoulders must be horizontal. This helps to avoid uneven leg actions Swimming Lessons MiddlesexFloatingSupine Float
Being on the back means that breathing is easy. The position is ideally that taken up in a supine push and glide from which the skill may be practised. It can also be achieved from the standing position by lowering the shoulders to the surface and gently lying back in the water. If the legs tend to sink, it can be helpful to allow them to relax and bend. Try gently extending the arms beyond the head to a star position. These adjustments redistribute the weight and may succeed in enabling horizontal flotation. Key Points • relax and pillow the head back in the water • take a breath • shoulders down, lie back gently • lift the feet • gently extend the arms • maintain a star shape Swimming Lessons MiddlesexActon Arlington Ashland Ayer Bedford Belmont Billerica Burlington Cambridge Carlisle Chelmsford Concord Dunstable Framingham Groton Holliston Hopkinton Hudson Lexington Lincoln Littleton Lowell Malden Marlborough Maynard Medford Melrose Natick Newton Newton Centre North Reading Pepperell Reading Sherborn Shirley Somerville Stoneham Stow Sudbury Tewksbury Tyngsboro Tyngsborough Uxbridge Wakefield Waltham Watertown Wayland Westford Weston Wilmington Winchester Woburn
