... Underwater PracticesSubmerging the face in the water is crucial to the development of prone swimming strokes and skills. It is essential, therefore that the skill is developed at the earliest opportunity. Many games can be adapted to include submerging opportunities. The activities are as varied as the teacher's imagination. The following are few examples:- • washing the face • pouring water over the head e.g., sponges, watering cans • blowing bubbles • humming and singing under water • bobbing up and down • touching the floor with different body parts • picking up objects from the bottom of the pool • passing through hoops • talking to a partner • pulling faces under water Swimming Lessons Scottish HighlandsFront CrawlFront Crawl is the fastest of the four competitive strokes. The body position is almost flat and the constant propulsion from the alternating arm and leg actions make it a very efficient stroke. Body Position Key Points • flat with a slight slope down to the hips. The head is neither buried nor lifted. The waterline is between the eyebrows and natural hairline • eyes look forwards and downwards • the slight slope down to the hips keeps the kick in the water • shoulders roll into the stroke to utilise the strong chest muscles and to generate a strong propulsive force • slight head adjustments change the position of the legs. If the head is lifted the legs will drop and vice-versa, like a see-saw • the legs work almost within body depth. This creates the least resistance to forward motion Swimming Lessons Scottish HighlandsFloatingAlphabet Floats
