... Underwater PracticesSubmerging the face in the water is crucial to the development of prone swimming strokes and skills. It is essential, therefore that the skill is developed at the earliest opportunity. Many games can be adapted to include submerging opportunities. The activities are as varied as the teacher's imagination. The following are few examples:- • washing the face • pouring water over the head e.g., sponges, watering cans • blowing bubbles • humming and singing under water • bobbing up and down • touching the floor with different body parts • picking up objects from the bottom of the pool • passing through hoops • talking to a partner • pulling faces under water Swimming Lessons West MidlandsBreaststrokeBreaststroke is the oldest and slowest of the four competitive strokes. It is the slowest because it is the least streamlined. There are several styles which can be developed as the skill level increases. Breaststroke is a popular recreational stroke because:- (i) Breathing is easy (ii) Swimmers can see where they are going (iii) A rest may be taken in the glide position Body Position Key Points • the body should be as horizontal as stroke movements allow. This means that there is a greater slope down to the seat than in other strokes in order to keep the leg action in the water • good floaters find it easy to achieve a stable, almost horizontal position. Poor floaters usually need to lift and lower the head every stroke cycle • ASA Law states that the shoulders must be horizontal. "What goes up must come down", is true and applicable to learners who jump up to try and float. If the skill starts from a standing position, the shoulders should be lowered and the feet gently lifted from the pool floor. There are a few who, because of their physical make up, are unable to remain afloat even with their lungs full of air. Such non-floaters may need to move their arms and legs a little to achieve flotation. The mushroom float is easy because balance is achieved automatically. Some of the upper back should be above the surface, hence the name of the skill. It is a useful test for flotation. • shoulders down • take a breath • lift the feet • knees tucked • head down towards the knees • arms wrapped around the knees or shins Pupils can count to time themselves. Ten seconds is adequate. Pupils should be discouraged from holding their breath for longer periods.
