The body position is almost flat and the constant propulsion from the alternating arm and leg actions make it a very efficient stroke. Body Position Key Points • flat with a slight slope down to the hips. The head is neither buried nor lifted. The waterline is between the eyebrows and natural hairline • eyes look forwards and downwards • the slight slope down to the hips keeps the kick in the water • shoulders roll into the stroke to utilise the strong chest muscles and to generate a strong propulsive force • slight head adjustments change the position of the legs. If the head is lifted the legs will drop and vice-versa, like a see-saw • the legs work almost within body depth. This horizontal float can be a continuation of a prone push and glide. It can also be achieved from standing by lowering the shoulders and gently leaning forwards to lie face down in the water. A star float or X position is an easy variation. A count of ten is enough time to sustain the face down position.
