... Regaining the standing positionIt is essential that non-swimmers being introduced to the water, are taught how to regain the standing position very early in their swimming development. This will help to develop confidence and is also an important safety skill. Initially this should be introduced using buoyancy aids or floats. From the prone position Practice • push and glide to the wall (with float) Teaching Points • lift head • tuck up knees • allow the feet to go to the bottom • stand up Practice • push and glide to the wall (without a float) Teaching Points • pull downwards and backwards with both arms • both feet down together Practice • push and glide away from the wall (without float) Teaching Points • relax - do not hurry • allow the legs to move towards the bottom of the pool Swimming Lessons BurtonFront CrawlFront Crawl is the fastest of the four competitive strokes. The body position is almost flat and the constant propulsion from the alternating arm and leg actions make it a very efficient stroke. Body Position Key Points • flat with a slight slope down to the hips. The head is neither buried nor lifted. The waterline is between the eyebrows and natural hairline • eyes look forwards and downwards • the slight slope down to the hips keeps the kick in the water • shoulders roll into the stroke to utilise the strong chest muscles and to generate a strong propulsive force • slight head adjustments change the position of the legs. If the head is lifted the legs will drop and vice-versa, like a see-saw • the legs work almost within body depth. This creates the least resistance to forward motion Swimming Lessons BurtonFloatingMushroom (Jelly Fish) Float
"What goes up must come down", is true and applicable to learners who jump up to try and float. If the skill starts from a standing position, the shoulders should be lowered and the feet gently lifted from the pool floor. There are a few who, because of their physical make up, are unable to remain afloat even with their lungs full of air. Such non-floaters may need to move their arms and legs a little to achieve flotation. The mushroom float is easy because balance is achieved automatically. Some of the upper back should be above the surface, hence the name of the skill. It is a useful test for flotation. • shoulders down • take a breath • lift the feet • knees tucked • head down towards the knees • arms wrapped around the knees or shins Pupils can count to time themselves. Ten seconds is adequate. Pupils should be discouraged from holding their breath for longer periods.
